Dermaplaning is a skin resurfacing procedure that uses an exfoliating blade to skim dead skin cells and remove hair from the face. It is an excellent alternative to manual exfoliation and facial hair removal.
Dermaplaning aims to remove fine wrinkles and deep acne scarring, making the skin’s surface look clear and soft. This treatment is effective for individuals looking to make their skin appear more youthful, healthy, and bright.
What is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is an exfoliating treatment that removes dead skin buildup and fine vellus hairs, known as “peach fuzz,” on the face using a scalpel or a dermatome tool. Like an exfoliation, it removes every barrier that can play a part in making your face look dull or uneven, resulting in an exceptionally smooth, fresh, and brighter appearance. It is also called blading or microplaning.
This treatment enhances the penetration of skincare products and acts as a prep for other procedures like lasers and peels. Because it unclogs the pores, making you less prone to acne breakouts. This is an excellent therapy for all skin types.
Continuous exposure to extreme environmental toxins, irritants, and UV rays causes the skin to appear dull. Dermaplaning removes those dull cells to reveal new cells that make you look polished and radiant. How well it works would depend on your skin type, tone, and medical history.
Dermaplaning Benefits
Dermaplaning is a high-speed skin treatment that takes only 30-45 minutes. There is no preparation or recovery time, making it easy to fit it into your schedule without disturbing other commitments. This treatment is also an excellent alternative for pregnant women and individuals with sensitive skin who cannot use certain products.

How Dermaplaning Works
The concept of Dermaplaning is similar to shaving. Instead of a razor, it uses a scalpel-type blade aimed at a 45-degree angle. This treatment removes dead skin cells, scar tissue, fine hairs, and other debris that may be present on the skin’s surface. You shouldn’t feel any pain during this procedure but may feel slightly prickling.
Before & Preparation
- On your first consultation, you will have a conversation with a practitioner at Spa26 to discuss your medical history, skin type, and the results you desire.
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. Drinking water will keep your skin hydrated, which is necessary for healthy skin and can help prevent any post-procedure swelling or tenderness.
- Inspect for wounds and make sure all injuries fully heal before treatment.
- Reschedule your appointment if you have an active acne flare-up to avoid inflaming your skin further or injuring the surface of your skin.
- Include an antibacterial skincare product in your routine.
Avoid:
- Exfoliating your skin for a minimum of three days.
- Direct sunlight or tanning for about 5-7 days.
- Using products with retinol if you have sensitive skin.
- Shaving before your appointment (men)
During the Procedure
- First, the practitioner will make you comfortable in a clean, comfortable room.
- The practitioner may provide you with sedation options. These often include a numbing spray or local anesthetic combined with an oral sedative or very rarely general anesthesia.
- The practitioner will use a gentle cleanser with alpha or beta hydroxy acids to help loosen dead skin cells. The practitioner allows the face to dry afterward.
- The practitioner will use an electronic or manual Dermaplaning tool for grazing above your skin when relaxed.
- After the treatment, the practitioner will soothe your face with a substance like an aloe. They will also rub sunscreen on your face.
- The practitioner will provide you with an aftercare guide.
Aftercare & Recovery
After the procedure, you should:
- Follow a simple skincare routine.
- Moisturize your skin regularly to hydrate it continuously.
- Use a high factor sunscreen consistently.
Avoid:
- The use of saunas or steam rooms for 24 hours.
- Engaging in any strenuous exercise for 24 hours.
